About Ababa Wandaro Dabaro (1896–1990)

Ababa Wandaro Revival Ministry (AWRM)

Ababa Wandaro Dabaro, often referred to as the "African, Ethiopian Apostle Paul", was a remarkable missionary whose life and ministry left a profound impact on the Christian faith in Ethiopia.

1. Early Life:

  • Born: 1896, in the district of Humbo, Wolaitta, Ethiopia.

  • Background: He followed in his father’s footsteps as a tenant farmer and weaver. His father was also a religious leader in the community.

2. Spiritual Awakening:

  • In 1924, Wandaro witnessed government soldiers escorting Prophet Esa Lale to prison in Addis Ababa, a moment that deeply troubled him.

  • Weary of the injustices in society, he cried out to Tosa (meaning ‘the high god’ in the Wolaitta language).

  • In his search for truth, he turned to the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) in Otona Soddo, where he embraced Christianity.

  • Soon after, he began preaching in the local Humbo town market and was baptized in 1933 with the first group of Wolaitta believers.

3. Trials and Perseverance:

  • Family Challenges: His wife initially left him because of his faith but later returned as a believer herself.

  • Persecution:

    • During the Italian occupation, Wandaro endured severe beatings, imprisonment, and periods of hiding and hunger.

    • Despite these hardships, he was known for singing hymns during nights of suffering and boldly sharing his faith in public markets.

4. Spiritual Impact and Legacy:

  • Known as a great prayer warrior and a model Christian.

  • Influence: Led many to faith, including Dana Maja, a powerful chief and former slave owner who later became a church leader.

  • His life of faith, courage, and devotion continues to inspire believers today.

Ababa Wandaro's legacy lives on through the Ababa Wandaro Revival Ministry (AWRM), which seeks to preserve his story and continue his mission of spreading the Christian faith.

The Ababa Wandaro Revival Ministry (AWRM) was established by the grandchildren of Ababa Wandaro to honor his legacy. The title 'Ababa' means 'respected father or elder'. The vision of AWRM is to ensure that the life and ministry of Ababa Wandaro are known to the current generation, with the goal of reviving and continuing his great mission within the church
